February 25th Weekly Connection

It's a Wrap.... What will you do with it now?
Jesus Christ is Lord of the Sabbath and He is our example of honoring the Sabbath              - discussion led by Roberta Sherman
Sundays are a gift to us from our Heavenly Father and blessings come to us from obedience to it.   If we considered our actions and thoughts on Sunday as a sign to our Heavenly Father, would we change what we do?   In John Chapter 5:1-20, Christ told the man at the pool to ‘Rise, take up thy bed, and walk’.   Rise is an action word, and our sign will take action.   The most important sign we can give to our Heavenly Father is taking the sacrament, so that we can have His spirit to be with us.   When we have His Spirit to be with us, it helps us to become more like our brother and Savior Jesus Christ.   But what else should we do on Sundays to set it apart from the other days of our week?  There are only a few things we are counseled about pertaining to our Sabbath day observance.   In January of 1993 we were advised not to go shopping, attend sporting events and to set ourselves apart from the activities of the world.    A good question to ask your Heavenly Father through prayer Sunday morning is… ‘What do I need to do today?”   As we follow the promptings, revelation and direction we receive, our lives will be filled with joy and peace.

February 18th Weekly Connection

It's a Wrap....What will you do with it now?
Bearers of Heavenly Light by Dieter F. Uchtdorf - discussion led by Bishop Mardesich

Often, we can feel that we are on a spiritual roller coaster, so to speak.  Life’s only constant is that it will have ups and downs.  Do we find that when we are ‘up’ that we forget to lean on our Father in Heaven? When we have health, financial stability and our temporal needs met do we at times disconnect ourselves from Heavenly Father?  Do we distance ourselves from his Light?    Many of us find that they only turn to him in times of struggle, or when we are ‘down’.  Heavenly Father will never distance himself from us, he is always available to share his light with us.  Heavenly Father’s light has perfect purpose and can help us to clearly see our divine potential.  It is only when we distance ourselves from him that darkness can take over, reducing our ability to clearly see what is laid out before us, and therefore diminishing our hope.  It is the action on our part, that will ultimately decide if we will live in the light or in the darkness.  Thankfully, Jesus Christ can cure anything.
The adversary works diligently to convince us that we, ourselves, or others we know are beyond hope.  But this is never true, because Jesus Christ truly can cure anything.  The reason it hurts to sin is because when we do, we are pulling and ripping from our divine identity and replacing it with darkness.  Likewise when we live the Gospel of Jesus Christ, we find ourselves happily magnifying our divine birthright as sons and daughters of a Heavenly Father.
Leslie Elmer and Sherry Shepherd made astute suggestions – instead of fault finding, or surveying what others are doing wrong....what if we looked to each other and focused on the light within.  What are others doing right?  In doing so, we would not only build up others, but we would find ourselves wanting to emulate their examples.  The light of Christ is an attractor.  We are drawn to those who have his light within.  Knowing that our actions can bring his light into our lives means that we have the potential to make every interaction positive and to draw others through our example closer to our Heavenly Father.
‘Every time you turn your hearts to God in humble prayer, you experience His light.  Every time you seek His word and will in the scriptures, the light grows in brightness.  Every time you notice someone in need and sacrifice your own comfort to reach out in love, the light expands and swells.  Every time you reject temptation and choose purity, every time you seek or extend forgiveness, every time you courageously testify of truth, the light chases away darkness and attracts others who are also seeking light and truth.’

February 11th Weekly Connection

It's a Wrap.... What will you do with it now?
The Plan and the Proclamation by Dallin H. Oaks - discussion led by Monica Buchanan

We began the lesson by reading The Family: A Proclamation to the World.  If you haven't had a chance to read this recently, please take a few minutes to do so.

We live in a time when the world is telling us things that go against the doctrine of the church. The world tells us we need to catch up with the times and that the things we believe are outdated but we must stand firm!  In Jesus' final teachings in mortality, He told His Apostles, "If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world,...the world hateth you."

"Those who do not believe in or aspire to exaltation and are most persuaded by the ways of the world consider the family proclamation as just a statement of policy that should be changed.  In contrast, Latter-day Saints affirm that the family proclamation defines the kind of family relationships where the most important part of our eternal development can occur."

Our children are being pulled in the ways of the world.  We must take time and teach them the doctrine on the family by reading and talking about what is written in the The Family Proclamation.  Let your children and grandchildren know your stance on this and have open discussions.

February 4th Weekly Connection

It's a Wrap.... What will you do with it now?
Council on How I can Be a Spiritual Leader in My Home - led by Stephanie Howell

The 3 main ideas discussed were:
1. Pray for family members by name.
2. See our family members the way God sees them.
3. Find ways to express love to our family.

While many experiences and thoughts were shared, here are just a few to help us as we put the above ideas into practice...

As we pray for family members by name, be patient, don't give up on them.
Pray to help see who they are to become.
We must first see ourselves the way God sees us.
When we start to focus on all of the negative things about a family member it keeps us from seeing who they really are...start focusing only on the positive things you see in that person.
When you serve your family, your love for them grows. Serve. Serve. Serve.
Forgiveness goes a long way in expressing love.

A council meeting should lead to action....THE CHALLENGE....Implement at least one of the 3 main ideas towards a family member. As you do this, see how your own heart is softened and turned towards Christ.

A great resource for learning how to be a spiritual leader in your home is Teaching in the Savior's Way Manual.  Go above and beyond and add a second challenge to take time to read it and apply the teachings in your home.  If you would like a hard copy, contact a Sunday School presidency member.

We'd love to hear feedback on your experiences with council challenges. Please leave a comment on this post or consider sharing with the sisters in Relief Society.
