The Sabbath is a day to Worship - discussion led by Clorissa Bascom
Why do we go to the temple?
Peace from the things we are worried about? Prayer and Strength? An escape from the cares of the world? To unite generations and feel closer to our ancestors? To be reminded that we are a
daughter of a Heavenly Father? To learn more about the Spirit?
What do we do to prepare to go to the temple?
Leave on time? Dress nicely? Pray for inspiration or answers to questions we have? Plan for opposition from the adversary? Change the music in the car? Create a reflective environment?
Now ask yourself, do I put the same obedience, significance and thought into my Sabbath day worship? We are commanded to keep the Sabbath day holy, just as we are commanded to attend the temple. Consider this - The temple is a sacred place and the Sabbath is a sacred time. The two have equal importance. It's sometimes easy to dismiss or brush off the small and simple commandments, like keeping the Sabbath Day holy and as a day of worship instead of following them with the same diligence that we do the larger ones. That being said we should not let ourselves become overwhelmed by the ideal picture of what Sabbath day worship is supposed to look like - there truly is no ideal and if there was we would all fall short! What if instead we thought of our Sabbath Day worship like an oil lamp, with drops of small and simple holiness to fill it. You thought of the Savior while in the shower before church - DROP, You said a prayer of gratitude - DROP, You read the sacrament Prayer while waiting for the Sacrament to be passed to you - DROP, you were kind to those around you - DROP. Our Sabbath Day Worship is part of our test here in mortality. Just as we are instructed in D&C 25:10 - don't let the things of the world distract us from our eternal priorities.
Everyone: Build a stronger relationship with your Father in Heaven.
Personalize it: Choose one thing that you need to work on to become closer to Heavenly Father.
Examples: attend the temple more often, spend more time in the scriptures, have more meaningful prayers, read and reread your patriarchal blessing, study conference talks, use positive talk about yourself, etc.
