We Can't Do It Alone - Robert D. Hales - discussion led by Roberta Sherman

Roberta explained that this  lesson is doctrinal but not well documented...

We are not alone in this life...We are all daughters of Heavenly Father who loves us and  because He does not expect us to be alone or do this life alone, He has given us a family.

We can't do it alone, we require others in our lives for guidance, nurture, love, security, strength.

Elder Hales said: "Because we are not perfect, we need others - we need to be as self-sufficient as we can, but not independent of others.

When we attempt to do it our own we can fail... No one is so rich they don't need help, and no one so poor they can't offer help.

"When we are in the service of our fellow beings, we are only in the service of our God."

What have you learned from serving?

Sister's answers:

• The spirit can guide you in ways to serve.
• Sometimes your service can't "fix" things for someone, but you can be a listening ear.
• The Spirit will confirm the importance of service.

Why is it so hard to receive service?

Sister's answers:

• We feel bad that someone else has to sacrifice for us.
• We don't want to feel like we've failed at something.
• Pride
• We don't realize that the service giver is blessed also.
• We don't feel worthy of someone's service.
• We feel vulnerable and feel like you're not in control.

Satan's tools are used to isolate us from one another in order to make us feel depressed, sad, empty and in a dark place.

We need to be able to open up and share our struggles with each other so we can receive light and love.

As we call on Heavenly Father for help, it usually comes through our service to one another. 

What blessings do we receive from accepting service?

Sister's answers

• People love who they serve...the more we serve the more we love.
• The same goes for Heavenly Father, the more we serve Him the more we love Him.
• We build new friendships.
• We break down barriers. 
• Our pride is stripped away.
• We learn to understand when those around us need service.
• We become less defensive.

We need to look to Christ as our example of service. We should serve as he served. We are the angels he uses to strengthen others in their struggles. He is aware of us and we are never forgotten. He will bless us, but sometimes we need to ask for help.

Council Action:

Choose something you feel powerless over and give it to our Savior, Jesus Christ.

In addition to this find one way to come to know Christ better.

Watch for sign ups for your Ministering Interviews during the month of November. Please sign up as soon as possible, so we can counsel together about how to better serve the sisters you minister to.

Making Ministering Interviews Meaningful 

In supporting President Russell M. Nelson’s statement that the ministering program will be a hinge point on which the course of the Church will swing, Elder Gary E. Stevenson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles taught, “The realization of his vision … might be predicated upon how well ministering brothers and sisters are taught and engaged in the ministering interview.”

Four tips for ministering brothers and sisters:

• Go to the interview seeking counsel. Be ready to learn.
• Be prepared to discuss needs that you may need help meeting.
• Focus on the individual’s strengths and abilities, not just needs.
• Contact the presidency to counsel between quarterly interviews as needed.

Ministering Interviews

These quarterly interviews between ministering sisters and the Relief Society presidency or ministering brothers and the elders quorum presidency are the only formal report we make regarding those we minister to. The interview is an opportunity on at least a quarterly basis to (1) counsel about the strengths, needs, and challenges of assigned families and individuals; (2) determine what needs the quorum, Relief Society, or ward council might assist with; and (3) learn from leaders and be encouraged in ministering efforts.

The elders quorum president and the Relief Society president communicate important needs directly to the bishop and will receive counsel and direction from him.

"A new name, new flexibility, and fewer reports will not make one ounce of difference in our service unless we see this as an invitation to care for one another in a bold new holier way."

Try, Try, Try by President Eyring led by Julie Peterson

Think of this as you read through the message: The Saviour is putting his name on your heart

Julie asked “ What is the purpose of life?”  Sisters responses were “Its a test”, “to try” and “to grow”

Luckily for us our our loving god has given us a sure way.

When is it enough to pass the test? The Saviour will meet you, to fill in the gaps. The Atonement of Jesus Christ helps us to pass the test. The Atonement was made so we are forgiven, for understanding, for unconditional love and for empathy.

The statement of President Nelson suggests one helpful answer. He said that we could take the name of the Savior upon us and that we could speak for Him. When we speak for Him, we serve Him. “For how knoweth a man the master whom he has not served, and who is a stranger unto him, and is far

from the thoughts and intents of his heart?”

Are we ready to speak for the lord? Ways suggested to help us was to “ Reach out to others helps us not to be alone. “ Listening to talks and knowing we can do it”, “ Sometimes we feel our feelings are unique, but others can help us as we share and the help us process”, “ We have to allow others to help us by reaching out”, “We need to allow ourselves to connect to others as a unit” and “Experiencing sorrow leads to experiencing good”.

Like little ducklings we and others appear to float on the water. But we are treading as fast as we can. We need to pray and rely on our Heavenly Father.

Going back to The Saviour is putting his name on our heart, some thoughts from the sisters were “Think, What would Jesus do? In all that we do”, Practice daily by being like Him and remember the song “ I'm Trying To Be Like Jesus”, Love as Jesus loves, Forgiveness, Having a testimony of our Heavenly Father, Praying for others. We will then see others as god sees them.

Think of someone this week, In your heart. Pray for them throughout the week, Help them, Serve them.

Council Action:

Choose something you feel powerless over and give it to our Savior, Jesus Christ.

October 14, 2018 Weekly Connection

It's a Wrap.... What will you do with it now?

President Nelson – Minister with the Power and Authority of God. Discussion led by Brother Mike Miller.

What tools does it take to do a DIY project on your home?  A nailer, level, mitre saw, tape measure, caulk, puddy, sandpaper, paint, etc. It’s hard to achieve a desirable outcome if your missing the tools you need. 

In life we are given Spiritual Tools. They include prayer, fasting, Temples, Scriptures, and the Holy Ghost. Another tool we have access to is the power of the Priesthood. Do we truly utilize and understand the great blessings that are ours through the Priesthood?

President Nelson explained that even some of the great Brothers in our church don’t fully understand the potential and abilities of the Priesthood. He related three different examples.   

1. The first of a Father who, while giving his baby a name during a baby blessing, neglected to give the baby a blessing.  Instead he offered a prayer and an opportunity was lost.
2.  Another story pointed out that at times while setting apart members for callings, members of the Bishopric neglect to bless them specifically in that calling.
3. The last example he used was when fathers do not use the Priesthood Power within their homes, neglecting to offer their families blessings when they are able to. 

Brother Miller equated this to doing a DIY project using all of the necessary tools. He encouraged the sisters to rely more on the Priesthood to bless our lives. He also shared that his favorite part of serving in the Bishopric is giving blessings to those who are being set apart. It was tender to hear him explain the power and love he felt flow through him to the recipients from their Heavenly Father. He then expounded on how we as sisters could be better ministers and serve at a higher capacity. He gave the following list from President Nelson:

·       Show up – use the spirit as your guide and do not wait for ‘the call for help’

·       Don’t let barriers stop you – love those you serve

·       Be observant and look for things in common with those you are called to minister to as well as others around you.  

·       Develop a friendship!

·       If you do the above you will start to see them as the Savior see them. 

Council Action:
