The Responsibility for Welfare Rests with Me and My Family

"I wish to speak of the basic principles that keep our feet on the ground economically. This is important to our happiness....... We must build upon sound principles. The bedrock principle of which I speak is that the responsibility for welfare rests with me and my family. In 1936 the First Presidency said in a great statement of purpose, "The aim of the Church is to help the people to help themselves." Some of us are children of the Great Depression in the United States over fifty years ago. Most of us who passed through that period will never forget the difficult economic times almost everyone experienced. At that time many banks failed;people lost their life's savings;a great many were unemployed, and some of them lost their homes because they could not pay the mortgage. Many went hungry. If we didn't eat our oatmeal cereal for breakfast, we would often have it fried for lunch or dinner. Such widespread economic problems could come again. But any of us, at any time, could meet with a personal calamity, such as sickness or an accident, which could limit or destroy our income."
Brett and Rebecca talked about listening to the spirit so that we could be directed on how best to help each of our families become more self-reliant. "When you feel those heartstrings being pulled, do you act on those impressions". Pres Packer said:...".refocus the goal of attending the temple so that our temporal and physical lives could also be blessed."
A few points that were brought up:
1. Pay your tithing
2. Attend the temple
3. Get out of debt
4. Be careful about investments
5. Be Wise
Brett and Rebecca shared that they wanted to follow President Chad Wilkinson's challenge to be out of debt in three years. Brett was inspired to start a side business that allowed them to become debt free.
Stephanie Howell and Reno Martin were asked to share a few thoughts.
Stephanie shared about the blessings of paying a full tithe and that it helped them to create a budget that they have continued to use for the past 15 years.
Reno talked about how they were blessed when he wanted to buy a very expensive toy and chose not to. He later lost his job and then needed to have a major knee replacement surgery. They continued to pay their tithing and were able to pay their bills through this difficult time. They always had enough.

Truly listening will help you know how to help meet the spiritual and temporal needs of others as the Savior would.

- Give them time - time to gather their thoughts, the silence doesn't always need to be filled
- Pay attention - listen with intent
- Clarify - clarifying reduces minunderstandings and shows your interest
- Reflect - Paraphrase again to understand and show you are listening
- Find common ground - Allthough you may not always agree with what they say, find things you can agree with.

Leslie Elmer is in Montana helping her daughter recover from a surgery. There's been some setbacks and hard things that they are dealing with and Leslie reached out to ask for prayers from her Saratoga Springs friends. Please pray for her to have the strength and endurance to continue to help her daughter and family and that things may improve soon so she can come home. She also asks if you want to contact her to do it through email as phone service is very spotty where she is at. Her birthday is coming up on March 29th and the best way to help her feel loved is through email as she won't be home to receive your thoughtful gifts and hugs.
