Because this talk made her evaluate her own life, Stephanie felt inspired that she should lead this discussion.
President Oakes began this talk: "Children are our most precious gift from God—our eternal increase. Yet we live in a time when many women wish to have no part in the bearing and nurturing of children. Many young adults delay marriage until temporal needs are satisfied. The average age of our Church members’ marriages has increased by more than two years, and the number of births to Church members is falling. The United States and some other nations face a future of too few children maturing into adults to support the number of retiring adults.1 Over 40 percent of births in the United States are to unwed mothers. Those children are vulnerable. Each of these trends works against our Father’s divine plan of salvation."
Stephanie asked: What our impression of motherhood is...
Brianne: Being a mother can bring a lot of pressure. Whether or not you give birth or not, you can still mother children.
Carol: The world thinks that having more than 1 or 2 children is crazy. Motherhood brings so much joy. Having childen pushes you to progress.
Samantha: Being a mother helps us understand how Heavenly Father feels...being a parent is a joy.
Are we showing our children how important we feel motherhood is? Stephanie sent an anonymous survey to the young women in our ward, and these are their impressions of motherhood:
1- Mothers sacrifice for us
2- They love their mother
3- Motherhood is sacred, needed, tiring,
4- Mothers have no freedom
5-bMothers love you no matter what
The young women were asked:
~ Do you want to be a mother? 11 out of 12 said yes
~ Do you want children right after you're married? 11 out of 12 want to wait They want to enjoy marriage and their husbands for awhile first, and you need to be ready to take care of children first.
Stephanie asked: How often do we grumble about the responsibilities of being a Mom? How often do we let our children know how much we love being a Mom?
Alma 57:21 - Yea, and they did obey and observe to perform every word of command with exactness; yea, and even according to their faith it was done unto them; and I did remember the words which they said unto me that their mothers had taught them.
The most important things our children can take from their Mother is how much we teach them and how much we love them.
We have to recognize and accept that we aren't going to be perfect. Satan knows how hard it is and how important it is to be a good Mother, and he works hard to discourage Moms
Yvonne wishes she had enjoyed her children more when they were young.
Tammy thinks we shouldn't be so busy while we're raising our children.
How do we develop our divine attributes? We have been counselled these 2 things:
We have to recognize and accept that we aren't going to be perfect. Satan knows how hard it is and how important it is to be a good Mother, and he works hard to discourage Moms
Yvonne wishes she had enjoyed her children more when they were young.
Tammy thinks we shouldn't be so busy while we're raising our children.
How do we develop our divine attributes? We have been counselled these 2 things:
- Limit your time and theirs on cell phones. 6 out of 12 of the young women surveyed felt they were addicted to their phones and 5 out of 12 elt their mothers were addicted.
- We need to teach our children to be kind. 6 out of 12 of our oung women think they have behaved in a bullying type of behavior and feel gossiping is a form of bullying. It's easier in today's world of social media and electronic devices to bully, because you are not facing the person you are bullying. 6 out of 12 of the young womenhave bullied intentionally in the past but now recognize how wrong it is and have stopped.
We all need to remember..."We are enough!"

March 7th - Our stake will be holding 4 different 12-week workshops on various topics in Self Reliance. It is a wonderful opportunity for those who would be interested in attending. The format is similar to the “Come Follow Me” curriculum where you study on your own and come to the group to share and build a cohort of people who can offer support and insight. The workshops are conducting by discussion leaders with some experience in the related topic.

Becoming a Shepherd

To effectively accept the invitation to minister, we must develop a shepherd’s heart and understand the needs of the Lord’s sheep. So how do we become the shepherds the Lord needs us to become?
As with all questions, we can look to our Savior, Jesus Christ—the Good Shepherd. He is our example. The Savior’s sheep were known and numbered, they were watched over, and they were gathered into the fold of God.
